State Fair Classic 2022 Recap

30 Aug 2022 by Mike Arndt

First off we would like to thank everyone that came out and supported this great event packed weekend. From Friday evening dinner, to High School and Junior events on Saturday and Sunday it was truly a blast!

On Saturday August 27th, twenty-one high school teams launched into Onondaga Lake looking for successful days on the water. Fishing proved to be tough for anglers, after a solid practice day on Friday the entire field struggled. That didn’t stop them from having a great time, each team was able to bring fish to the scales and show off their days catch! Hot off an incredible showing in the NY Youth HS Team Trail and an respectable finish in the Bassmaster High School National Championship, taking 2nd with 17.14lbs the duo of Brody Herron and Liam Tanner. Just squeaking out them for 1st, the first time team of Aeddon Landphair and Zander Terhune went to work and managed to pull in 17.37lbs of Onondaga Lake largemouth to take the victory by less than a .5lb!!! Both teams qualified for the 2023 NY Bass Youth High School Championship in the spring of 2023.

After a great day on Saturday, the Junior anglers were able to take a chance at competing as well on Sunday August 28th. Sunday’s weather turned to be a slick calm and quickly warming day, six teams took on the conditions and while a tough bite was there. These 2nd-8th graders were able to bring fish to the scale. Taking the lead early on in the weigh-in, Caleb Robert and James Law hauled in 7.48lbs. After sitting on the Hoffman Hot Seat for almost the entire weigh-in, they were displaced by the biggest bag of the day. An impressive 12.79lb bag with a 3.96lb lunker brought in by Jason and Tyler Perkins! This was the first event of the 2nd season of the 2022/23 Junior Team Trail. These anglers fish a series of events and a “win and in” championship to give out our two Bassmaster Junior Championship bids.

This entire weekend’s events could not be pulled off without a long list of thanks from the volunteers who helped us behind the scenes, to the parents and captains that brought the anglers to the event and out fishing! A very huge shoutout to another great year partnering with The Great New York State Fair and the State Police for an incredibly smooth and well orchestrated event. We are forever grateful to them for giving us an incredible platform for us to utilize for our anglers!
